Taiwan, the country deemed worldwide as independent is seen by China as a possession. Chthonic stand out of the very unknown Taiwanese metal scene, as a weapon that China should be scared of. For its leader Freddy Lim, is a firm believer of Taiwan independence.
This album is centred around Taiwan's dark past and is relayed onto oriental black metal, which is of course taking the world by storm. Bands such as Melechesh have made that same move. Chthonic are laden with a blistering drumming pace, sharp guitar playing and bass ferocity, symphonies flowing like the Taiwanese rivers, softly and calmly from the keyboard and hena.
Laced with traditional black metal and oriental folk music, Taiwan's Chthonic are brutal, no, fucking brutal black metallers. All melodic black metals have flowing melodies, but Chthonic have more than that, and with the song '49 theurgy chains', the darkest secrets are played. Evil, despair, melancholy, and mysterious, just a few words and one phrase to bracket Chthonic, not evil as in murder evil, but evil as in relaying darkness into their lyrics, these musicians take their history, re-word it and add music to create a force that only Beijing can feel shit scared of. Taiwan may be small, but fuck, Chthonic are larger than Russia, China stands no chance.
